When scientists bother to use real vitamin E, they get results! A 2009 study with real vitamin E found it slowed breast cancer growth and may even prevent breast cancer. Real vitamin E is composed of 4 tocopherols: alpha, beta, delta, and gamma tocopherols, yet most studies are done with d-alpha-tocopherol alone, or worse, with synthetic dl-alpha-tocopherol In three uncontrolled trials, in 5 and 32 breast cancer patients, and in 14 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, respectively, oral vitamin E supplementation was beneficial to the resolution of hand-foot skin syndrome related to sorafenib or capecitabine therapy 42-44. These results are preliminary at best Dietary β-carotene, vitamin C and E intake and breast cancer risk in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC). Specifically, compared with nonusers, frequent users (6 to 7 days per week) of vitamin C evidenced a lower risk of all-cause mortality (HR=0.78; 95% CI: 0.61-1.00) and reduced risk of breast cancer recurrence (HR=0.71; 95% CI: 0.54-0.92) PURPOSE Hot flashes represent a substantial clinical problem for some breast cancer survivors. Although estrogen or progesterone preparations can alleviate these symptoms in many patients, concern remains regarding the use of hormonal preparations in such women. Thus, there is a perceived need for nonhormonal treatments for hot flashes for breast cancer survivors. Based on anecdotal evidence.

Vitamins and Cancer Risk. Vitamins have been promoted as a general panacea, as well as a means of preventing cancer. In reality, high doses of vitamins may even cause cancer. Steven Novella on May 6, 2015. One of the greatest triumphs of marketing over evidence was the incredible rise of vitamin supplement use in the 20th century Recently, we have learned that vitamin E tocotrienols maybe a powerful weapon against breast cancer. There are basically two types of breast cancer: estrogen-positive and estrogen-negative. Estrogen-positive cancers are estrogen-sensitive, which means that estrogen can stimulate the tumors to grow A derivative of vitamin A, known as retinoic acid, found abundantly in sweet potato and carrots, helps turn pre-cancer cells back to normal healthy breast cells, which may help explain why some. Participants in the study were given 12 weeks of either vitamin E vaginal suppository or conjugated estrogen vaginal cream, 0.625 mg (0.5 gm is equivalent to 1.8 gm of the cream in the applicator). In 2011, there will be an estimated 241,000 new cases of prostate cancer and 34,000 deaths from the disease nationwide. Some early research had suggested that selenium or vitamin E might reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer

Low-dose vitamin E may help prevent prostate cancer, but high-dose vitamin E may increase it. In people deficient in vitamin E (rare in North America), vitamin E supplementation may reduce the risk of liver cancer. High-dose vitamin B12 was found to increase the risk of colorectal cancer in older adults For case-control studies, dietary vitamin E and total vitamin E reduced breast cancer risk by 18% and 11%, respectively . When the cohort studies were pooled with the case-control studies, dietary vitamin E and total vitamin E both became nonsignificant . Thus, a conclusion remains elusive between breast cancer and vitamin E

The supplementation of vitamin E (equivalent to 180 mg/day of RRR-α-tocopherol), alone or in combination with selenium, in the multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled SELECT trial (SELenium and vitamin E Cancer prevention Trial) was halted because there was no evidence of benefit in preventing prostate cancer in 35,533 healthy men aged 50. In 2011, data showed that men taking vitamin E alone had a significantly increased risk of prostate cancer, but men taking vitamin E plus selenium did not. If men had low selenium levels at the start of the trial, the selenium supplement may have counteracted a negative effect of the vitamin E supplement Remember the Importance of Vitamin D! A deficiency in vitamin D is associated with tumor progression and metastasis in breast cancer, suggests a new study. The study, primarily conducted using cell lines and mice, also identified an association between vitamin D levels and the expression of ID1, an oncogene that has been associated with tumor growth and metastasis in breast cancer and other cancer types In newborns or premature babies, vitamin E can lead to the development of anaemia. Therefore, vitamin E supplements are provided orally or intravenously. In full-term newborns, vitamin E deficiency is less detected as they get the vitamin through breast milk or commercial formulas. K2 and breast Cancer Breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer in the United States, with approximately 232,340 new cases diagnosed in 2013. In an early study, the anti-tumor activities of vitamin K1, K2, and K3 were compared against a panel of human cancer cell lines, and vitamin K2 was less potent than vitamin K3 (Wu, et al 1993) Vitamin E helps to build normal and red blood cells, as well as working as an antioxidant. Research is finding evidence that vitamin E may protect against prostate and colorectal cancer. The recommended dietary allowance for vitamin E is 15 milligrams per day. The adult upper limit for vitamin E is 1,000 milligrams per day

Also, stop taking vitamin E supplements two weeks before your surgery or as soon as possible, although vitamin E in a multivitamin is okay. Breast cancer treatment often causes women to enter menopause prematurely. Although each woman reacts to therapy individually, certain side effects are common.. The study found that people with deficient serum vitamin D levels according to the NAM definition had a 31% higher risk of colorectal cancer during the length of time they were followed, which was an average of 5 ½ years (the full range was 1-25 years). The lowest colorectal cancer risk was found in people who had circulating vitamin D levels. In patient with parathyroid cancer, vitamin D has been shown to prevent or delay the progression of recurrence (Palmieri-Sevier et al., 1993). In locally advanced or cutaneous metastatic breast cancer, topical calcipotriol treatment reduced the diameter of treated lesions that contained vitamin D receptor (VDR) (Bower et al., 1991) The breast cancer group revealed a fall in IL-6 amount and cancer mass and proliferation [29]. Although this study explored multiple areas in the vitamin C mechanism of action in tumors, a comprehensive case-control study in humans would give a thorough understanding of how ascorbate could fight these tumor cells

What dictates how vitamin E supplements affect cancer risk

The researchers found that women who took supplements containing either vitamin C or vitamin E six to seven days a week had a lower risk of cancer recurrence. For example, 540 women who took vitamin C had a 15% chance of breast cancer recurrence, compared to a 19% chance in the 1,072 women who did not use vitamin-C supplements A low dietary vitamin E intake has been suggested to increase the risk of breast cancer. We examined the dietary intake and the concentration of vitamin E in breast adipose tissue of women in Kuopio, Finland, diagnosed between 1990 and 1992 with benign breast disease (n=34) and with breast cancer (n=32) SUMMARY In this study, the serum vitamin E (total tocopherol) levels in patients with breast cancer (n= 100) and healthy controls (n= 70) were measured. The mean values for vitamin E were found to be 0-44 mg/100 ml in breast cancer patients and 1108 mg/100 ml in controls. In the statistical evaluation, the vitamin E levels in breast cancer patients are significantly lower than in the. The role of vitamin D in relation to breast cancer incidence and outcome is controversial. Evidence from in vitro studies [1, 2], animal studies [3, 4], and selected clinical observational studies [5, 6] has generally supported an association between higher vitamin D intakes and levels with lower breast cancer risk, but the results have not been consistent Doctors should measure vitamin D levels in their breast cancer patients. If they are deficient, they should be started immediately on 40,000 IU of vitamin D daily to get it up to 40 to 60 ng/mL. Of the breast cancer survivors, approximately 36.4% ever used any type of vitamin supplement after their diagnosis. Vitamin C was the most commonly used (17.5%), followed by B vitamins (16.3%. A low vitamin D status is associated with an increased risk of various cancers, such as of colon, breast, prostate and hematological cells. The biologically most active vitamin D metabolite 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D 3 (1,25(OH) 2 D 3) is a high affinity ligand of the transcription factor vitamin D receptor (VDR). 1,25(OH) 2 D 3 induces via VDR changes to the epigenome of healthy and neoplastic. Vitamin D has been suggested to prevent and improve the prognosis of several cancers, including breast cancer. We have previously shown a U-shaped association between pre-diagnostic serum levels of vitamin D and risk of breast cancer-related death, with poor survival in patients with the lowest and the highest levels respectively, as compared to the intermediate group

Taken as a whole, observational studies have not found that vitamin E in food or supplements offers much protection against cancer in general, or against specific cancers Studies with high dose vitamin C have shown cytotoxic and anti-metastatic activity on various cancer types mainly by its action as a pro-oxidant agent. Based on the outcomes obtained in this clinical case, we recommend continuing studying the role of intravenous infusion of high dose vitamin C, as an adjuvant treatment for breast cancer. A significant inverse association between vitamin C intake and breast cancer risk was found in a meta-analysis of 12 case-control studies ( 13). Prospective studies ( 6 - 12), however, have not supported associations between vitamins C or E and breast cancer risk
